Mixed Blood

  • Mixed Blood 1501 South 4th Street Minneapolis, MN, 55454 United States (map)

Mixed Blood Theatre was the first mixed-race theater company in Minneapolis with an ensemble that featured ten African American employees and players, as well as six Native Americans and seven white people. The venue, in conjunction with the Penumbra Theatre, offered new opportunities for Black Minneapolitans to enter the world of theatre. Described by its founder Jack Reuler, as an “identity-conscious organization,” our theater continues to “disrupt injustices, advance equity, and build community.”

What to Expect

A tour of the property occupied by the Minneapolis Fire Department until at least 1963. The fire station provided services for the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood, which was primarily populated by Scandinavian immigrants during the late nineteenth century. Mass migration from Norway and Sweden to Minnesota began in 1880, and the immigrant population of Cedar-Riverside reached its peak in 1916. This property was constructed in 1887 as the new permanent home for Minnehaha Hose 5.
